Secret Machines - 'The Road Leads Where It's Led' (679)

4/5

By: Kari Wynn

Secret Machines - 'The Road Leads...'Ah, Machines of discretion; a band with numerous comparisons to a vast and ridiculous range of graceful chuggers, not least the Floyd, My Bloody Valentine, Interpol, Neu and Neil Young & Crazy Horse. Just thinking of a combo of the aforementioned is enough to strike fear in the earnest heart of any indie geek. Surely, it can't be?

It can. Unbelievably, the Secret Machines are a band who not only defy definition - they outright flaunt that fact. On 'Road Leads Where Its Led', the latest from much-lauded debut 'Now Here Is Nowhere', they've somehow thrown together an insanely infectious stomp that strikes up the turgid beats of Primal Scream to the spike of The Chameleons, with a bit of echoey psychedelica thrown in just so we could probably compare them to a million other bands. Smart, sharp lyrics with a sexy stance; hypnotic percussive fervour and bass with both fingers and noses in the air.

Blowing all the other kids away? Quite possibly.
