With Bowie, 'Exile On Main Street' and Marc Bolan bellowing out the stereo on the open highway... we're back in a time where hair, lo-fidelity, live production, guitar-solos and women with their bits hanging out appearing on the artwork were not merely a consensus - but defining.
Louis XIV are one of the better new-band discoveries. For one, they've done their f**king homework. 'Finding Out True Love Is Blind' is Iggy Pop drawling over a call-and-response backdrop of clanging chords and bizarre keyboard-twinkling refrains. 'Louis XIV' is more T-Rex, 'Paper Doll' draws itself to a fuzz-distortion, fade-out climax, and 'It's The Girl That Makes Him Happy' clunks along lazily with White Stripes solo freak-outery along the way, and is - as such - sort of sleazily exhilarating. Louis XIV: they've got a proper title for a reason, y'know.
