Field Music - 'Shorter, Shorter' (Memphis Industries)

3/5

By: Thomas Hannan

Field Music - 'Shorter, Shorter'What is a band anyway? Are you strict about things, do you want your bands to be rigid and entirely devoted to the cause, certainly more than a mere hobby? Field Music aren't so caught up in the technicalities - they admit that their line-up, which currently contains an ex-Futurehead and a current-Maximo Park employee, is hardly set in stone. Neither is when they will write, record, play any shows or decide it's time to take any of this too seriously. Gets you excited about their debut single, doesn't it?

Actually, seeing as this is rather good, it's a little annoying that we won't know when the next instalment will grace us; much like waiting anxiously for the next Harry Potter book, except less of a waste of time. 'Shorter Shorter' bears little flourishes in the production that make it akin to some classic sixties psychedelia a la The Zombies or Love, but also a modern eccentricity that means it would fit as well on the Super Furries' 'Radiator' as it would on 'Forever Changes'. It sounds miles away from the other branches in the band's family tree, and for this, we politely applaud.

It does, however, make you think of another band every time you spin its seven inches. Unique it ain't, but charmingly succinct it sure is - as if the title didn't hint as much anyway, 'Shorter Shorter' is incredibly brief, a momentary shuffle of an often forgotten way with melody and an admirably to-the-point delivery. Here's to a blossoming career, assuming they can be bothered.
