Hard-Fi - 'Tied Up Too Tight' (Atlantic)
3/5
By: Lauren Gallagher
Yet another 'hot' band, tipped for greatness this 2005 by all and sundry. Just what do Hard-Fi have to offer the whispering scenesters? A new interpretation of suburban tales, heavy ska influences, and sing-a-long choruses perfect after a few too many. Richard Archer wails with confusion over strings, piano, and a bright guitar in 'Tied Up Too Tight'. But where does it all take us?
The taut structure of b-side 'Middle Eastern Holiday' fares even better; its ska/punk crossover would have California skankers tripping over their checkered shoes. Not sure how Jack and Megs would feel about echoing, lethargic, skank version of one of their best tunes, but Hard-Fi appear to like it enough to release it. A lot of pent-up suburban angst released here, which is probably some healthy catharsis for the Staines ensemble.
