The Modern - 'Industry' (Universal)

3/5

By: Maugan Lloyd

The Modern - 'Industry'So it's now OK to actually like 80s pop, and not just in an ironic and sneering way. The Modern are not trying to be Electroclash. Fischerspooner took an 80's style and twisted it into a violent non-stop electric cabaret for a new millennium; The Modern have a lowly goal.

And what an aspiration: to be The Darkness for the 80's new wave; who knows - it could make you famous, guys.

'Industry' is a vibrant slab of fuzz-guitar enhanced electro. It's catchy, and can get stuck in your head for days like good pop can. The song starts off like 'Mirror Man' and moves through 'The Lebanon', just as it should. More to the point, 'Industry' is a less energetic 'Emerge', with similar structure but little of the power. But chalks granted for the fervour.
