Editors - 'Munich' (Kitchenware)
4/5

Editors (no 'The', so there's one tick already) are in that comfortable position of having enough contemporary points of reference to reap the benefits of being part of a scene, but - by virtue of simply being better than most other bands at the second single stage - their situation is even more exciting. Few things get us giddier than a band who both already sound great and drop another hint at how good they're eventually going to be with every kick of the bass-drum.
Lyrically, this is ambiguous to the point of real confusion, what it has to do with 'Munich' other than sounding bigger than it is left up in the air, but regardless, it really is invigorating stuff. A swirling, ghostly riff is fiercely plucked out on a single guitar string whilst a rampant rhythm section aims to hammer it in place, never quite succeeding. Then you notice every section of the song could be a chorus, and react appropriately by bellowing along to each word.
So their basis is one of sufficient sturdiness to launch a considerable attack on our consciousness. Their songs are of a standard high enough to be hypnotically tapping on its door already. The contents are theirs for the taking.
