OK Go - 'OK Go' (Capitol)

3/5

OK Go - 'OK Go'

Ok Go comprise four, spry young men from Chicago who make a resolutely spirited bounce-punk racket. And those who appreciated London's very own Silver Sun will find plenty to enjoy here too. Worryingly.

Syrupy harmonies and swooning High School romanticism abound on this, their debut LP, as do playful, 80s Casio keyboard sound-effects, strangely evocative of the soundtrack to old skool Sega favourite 'Sonic The Hedgehog'. The aural equivalent of a John Hughes teen movie also, the lyrics and subject-matter seldom veer far from the reliable domain of girls, relationships and the problems the lads encounter with them - occurring, of course, either in the form of vivacious 'whoo-hoo' rock ('Get Over It, 'Don't Ask Me') or by way of the more contemplative mid-pacer.

It's just about introspective enough to be classified as 'emo', but the band just don't seem to want to appear quite that earnest. Hell, it's all just too damn *perky*. Good, clean, unchallenging fun then; and - for better or worse - there'll always be a market for that.
