Battle - 'Isabelle' / 'Feel The Same' (Fierce Panda)

4/5

By: Toby L

Battle - 'Isabelle'Ambitious debut from Luton-based proto-synth-young-punks, Battle. They write sprawling hymns for the feeling generation, and throttle and jerk with the best of them. But, more than this, much more this, write the best songs.

'Isabelle' is a classy affair, all spiralling guitars and frontman Jason's all-too-intoxicating vocal abrasion and calls; he's a rabid one. And in its middle-eight - the beauty of mess: the guitar 'solos' are the noisiest we've heard since Graham Coxon's 'Golden D' record some years back. Bloody filthy. Just as good as that twanging, anthemic ditty, however, is (sort of) double A-side 'Feel The Same' - which builds to a maniacal close and a guitar-line that indents upon the psyche long after it winds to an abrupt halt. We're hooked, already.
