Beck - 'Midnite Vultures' (Geffen)

4/5

By: Toby L

Beck - 'Midnite Vultures'God damn, I want one hot tub, five naked babes and a pumping stereo... Well, obviously, I presently don't, but surely some of these were the motivations in making this run-packed, humping hour. Containing 60 minutes of pure, unadulterated, juicy disco-funk romps, Beck manages to weave the story of sex into eleven of the most interesting jams you'll ever hear.

In the 90s, Beck Hansen has singlehandedly been the UK's favourite US alternative, solo star thanks to his original and sometimes bizarre fusing of rock, rap, country, folk, hip hop, and mock-pop, delivered in a polished sheen that can simply blind listeners. To step into the 21st Century, Beck has produced an album that will allow him to remain in this prized position and his recent Carling Weekend performances proved how crowd-pleasing live acts often don't come half as big as this.

From the beginning, 'Sexx Laws', featuring a weirdly necessary banjo solo, is enough to cause a damp sweat, but by the time 'Nicotine & Gravy', complete with all girl backing singers, booms out of your beat-box, your shoulders have run away from your body, bopping by themselves in the corner of the room. However, it's not all funk-soul brother madness/genius, as Beck manages to incorporate his trademark beeps and squawks in 'Pressure Point' and the touching 'Beautiful Way', whilst revealing his bare-arsed soul on the high octave crooner, 'Debra', in which he wails about how he wants to bang a girl and her sister; classy subject matter, of course.

Where this true revolutionary goes from here is anyone's guess, but there's no point expecting anything less than intriguingly wonderful when you think of what this artist will pull from the bag in his next record. But if he continues to make all the lesbians scream, rockfeedback won't be disappointed. That's for sure.
