Antony & The Johnsons - 'Hope There's Someone' (Rough Trade)

4/5

By: Toby L

Antony & The Johnsons - 'Hope There's Someone'Depending on who you speak to, Antony & The Johnsons are either the biggest, camp and dodgy cabaret send-up of 2005, or the most heart-rending outfit to have laid sound to tape in the last twenty-five years.

Oh-so-controversially, we're nudging closer and closer towards that second notion. So beauteous, so laden with soul and sweet honesty... the nearest parallel to Antony and his band is widely acknowledged as Nina Simone. That's some company. And it's with good reason. 'Hope There's Someone' is a sumptuous, intense, piano-based ode, dripping with desperation and refined melancholy, begging for acknowledgement, the merest of understanding. Don't worry, Antony; you're doing just fine.
