The Stands - 'When The Night Falls In' (Echo)
3/5

Being a guitar band from Liverpool with melodious aspirations has been a rather difficult image to update since the you-know-who's. Hence, to their credit, The Stands really haven't bothered to try. One might be forgiven for thinking the band were perhaps the next-big-thing in the 60's, and were frozen in stasis until the 00's, Dr. Evil style, to take over the music industry and ransom it for one gazillion dollars.

Their biography aside, though, the lads really do have the charm and the tunes to back up their bid for recognition. 'When The Night Falls In' is a countrified cover-version of 'From Me To You' in all the good ways, and not a single one of the bad ones (if you can think of one).
The Stands could find themselves either side of the public's attention and pleasure. Comparisons with their city and tour-mates The Coral are bound to centre upon The Stands' relative lack of innovation... but what really matters here is the songs, and how bloody lovely they are. Whether they'll stand the test of the forthcoming years we don't know... but they'll certainly make excellent companions for the summer, and hopefully slightly beyond.
