Oceansize - 'Heaven Alive' (Beggars Banquet)
3/5
By: Kevin Molloy
Let us not be mistaken; 'Heaven Alive's a slow-burner in that most trad of senses, boasting the kind of chorus that tries to be more glorious than it really is; but in the absence of soaring epiphany there remains the sturdily anthemic. It also thinks hard to rock to the same degree, but the bass-line makes up for any over-thought. Those four strings simultaneously make the song, and make us crank our bass cabs up to 11, to fully appreciate the fuzzy, warbling musicianship of the lower frequencies.
Matched with seagull-squalling guitars and the choir-like vocals we receive the distinct impression that Oceansize are a band that have found their calling, and are shouting back. Now all that remains is to prove the worthiness of their self-assigned moniker, and to move a little from the safety of this over-explored harbour, and into some choppier, uncharted waters, as they did with that first record.
