Devendra Banhart – 'Heard Somebody Say' (XL)

Nobody can be weird relentlessly. Salvador Dali probably enjoyed crossword puzzles, David Lynch is rumoured to watch Holby City and occasionally, in breaks from being an utter freak, Devendra Banhart writes nice, normal, pretty songs.
So this one, swooning and cooing away as it does, is a delicate, handsome little ditty about how war is bad, killing other people is bad, and being a loved up hippy is comparatively really excellent - which it is.
But compared to Devendra's rambling on about Chinese kids, hairy people and his general adolescence complex, it's merely lovely, not a substance consisting of brilliance in mind altering qualities. But at least when Banhart's not doing that, he is at least doing this.
