Richard Ashcroft - 'Break The Night With Colour' (Parlophone)
2/5
By: Matt Tomiak
Richard Ashcroft: erstwhile leader of The Verve, champion of the dual concepts of Big Music and Big Themes and possessor of a decidedly
underwhelming solo career.
Will his third album herald a comeback akin to that of his hometown football club, Wigan Athletic, currently taking the Premiership by storm?
Alas, 'Break The Night With Colour' is more relegation struggler than Champions League contender. Following his old mate Noel G's recent example of replacing the buoyancy and resilience of yore with gloomily resigned, mid-life ruminations, here we find Dickie lamenting that 'The world's so frightening/Nothing's going right today/'Cos nothing ever does,' over a soporific, single-paced dirge.
Sheeesh, talk about glass half-empty. But then again, if you counted 'History' and 'Bittersweet Symphony' amongst your back catalogue, yet were now reduced to peddling this dour, drizzly moping, you might be a touch disheartened as well.
