Sigur Ros - Hoppipolla (EMI)
4/5
By: Thomas Hannan

Two things about 'Hoppipolla' reinstate faith in human nature...
Firstly, mere human beings, not demigods or products of the supernatural, are responsible for something so grandiose, epically proportioned and gloriously over-orchestrated as these few minutes of music, jetting from delicately plucked, almost music box style singular notes in its formative stages toward its brass laden, empowering finale - something that happens in under five minutes, but despite the huge leap in sound, doesn't feel at all rushed. Ahh, the end of it even feels like the dawn of a bright new morning.
Secondly, it warms the heart to learn that the masses apparently love it. The BBC lapped it up like kittens at a bowl of milk, using it as the soundtrack to every piece of self promotion and wildlife documentary that would otherwise have remained silent. Furthermore, you can turn on mainstream radio, in the middle of the day, and this will be in process, blaring out for all the world to witness, take in a deep breath, and declare allegiance to. It's as if us banging on about the merits of Sigur Ros for all these years has finally worked, and The Man have decided they'd best love it as much as we do, or lose touch with what we're all about.
Humanity - consider this a pat on the back.
