Pitchshifter - 'PSI' (Sanctuary)
3/5
By: Matt Tomiak

Ironic, isn't it? The Nottingham underground pioneers of the sound since dubbed 'Nu-Metal' stand on the brink of commercial breakthrough - yet, if and when 'PSI' sends them into the big league, they risk sounding derivative due to the main and various pale imitators already saturating the market. And to think the 'Shifter have been around since 1990...
Seemingly, with age, their sound has improved. Opener 'Stop Talking (So Loud)' lurks around menacingly for the first sixty seconds before its chorus leaps out and clobbers you mightily 'round the head, whilst 'Shutdown' and 'Whatever' will be lapped up by Lostprophets fans everywhere. As an entity in itself, the whole LP should appeal to those who like their guitars loud and emotion genuine, though there are chances that some might find the relentless pace at times wearying... However, one benefit of such a mood is that the relentless, non-stop nature of 'PSI' does at least mean we're not subjected to the dreaded 'heartfelt ballad'. Woo-hoo!
So, come on then - go check out the seasoned pros of the genre; after all this time, they perhaps deserve it more than any other.
