The Gossip - Listen Up (Back Yard)

One note's sometimes all it takes - relentlessly plucking to cause a bass guitar to repeat the same tone over and over, if done with enough feeling, can be all one requires to start a party. Add a few flourishes of guitar noise, some deftly funky percussion and Beth Ditto's fervently delivered warnings of 'trouble in store' and you'll have people turning up with beer and smiles on their faces before the track's done.
The one great thing about 'Listen Up' is that it does next to nothing really rather well. A whole host of supplementary remixes attempt to up the disco factor but not once does it come close to the simple, sparse excitement of the original, which goes from having one's toes tapping to hair whizzing around one's head without doing really anything of real note (making it rather difficult to critique).
Whatever it did, whatever they do, it makes for four minutes of deliciously dirty listening. The only thing you wish for however is that The Gossip learn to do something else as well...
