Beth Orton - Shopping Trolley (EMI)

2/5

Despite the odd Mercury nomination here and there, she bubbles under the surface without really venturing anywhere you'd not expect...

And, lo and behold, that's exactly what the Jim O'Rourke-produced 'Shopping Trolley' does, too. It boasts a somewhat bigger sound than previous releases, maintains the trademark acoustic strum and adds some huge Spector-esque drums to that wonky, warbling wail. However, the melody itself merely meanders, and whilst one expects some memorable chorus, it never appears. One for the converted, then.
