The Motorettes / Kubichek - Split 10" (Kitchenware)
4/5

This 4-track split EP from these co-North Easterners first has The Motorettes serving up their 'Relax It's the 80s', a shameless slice of pure power pop. Surprisingly similar to the fodder served up by the likes of the All American Rejects and lapped up by the MTV generation, they move on to a cover of Kubichek!'s 'Stutter', complete with a clap-along acoustic hook and a chorus that builds into a wall of sound, stomping drums, raucous guitars and full on football-match style chanting all evident.
Kubichek!'s 'Opening Shot' is a blinder, possessive of a Joy Division-esque intro utilising driving guitars, thrashing manic drumming and a voice not unlike that of Roddy Woomble from Idlewild (y'know, when he sounded like he meant it). The melodic chorus brings touring buddies Editors to mind, whereas when 'We Are Solution', a live Motorettes favourite, is covered, it ends up something unavoidably Kubichek; poppy, angular guitars, a crescendo of drums, twinkling xylophone and mantra-like vocals each in effect.
Both bands, though disparate, seem to be able to cross into the other's sound with ease. A smashing double act, then.
