Box Codax - The Naked Smile (Thin Man)

3/5

By: Keri Kennedy

Box Codax - Naked SmileSide projects. Everywhere. But this latest addition, Box Codax - namely Franz Ferdinand guitarist Nick McCarthy, wife Manuela and friend Alexander Ragnew (whom McCarthy met as a teenager way before FF's incarnation) - couldn't be further away form the angular indie-rock of Nick's full time band.

'Naked Smile' is downright weirdness, nonsense in the best possible sense of the word, and the kind of music one imagines would perfectly soundtrack a curious David Shrigley illustration. From the initial opening choir of 'ahhhh's on to the squelching synth and wonky backing vocals provided by Manuela, Box Codax seem truly off their trolley.

The combination of early 80s rap beats, Kraftwerk-esqe electronica and more or less all that's in between make this unlike anything one has ever heard before - and bloody confusing in the process it is, too.
