Clayhill - One Nerve (Eat Sleep)
3/5
By: Thomas Hannan
The first few bars here suggest something interesting. Maybe it's those small hi hat splashes arriving where others wouldn't place them that get our ears pricked up. What a curious little beat, one thinks. The next few suggest something sleepy. A grizzly voice starts a near whisper, and eyelids start to feel heavier. I might become more interested in slumber than the record.
Then it dawns that this is intentional - 'One Nerve' is a gently strummed, melancholic lullaby of a track, intriguing enough to hold interest but hypnotic enough to instil a slumberous haze in a listener. Whilst it perks up somewhat for the chorus, slow and steady is its overriding tactic.
Slow - oh yeah. However, need it really go on for a whole five minutes? Yep - 'One Nerve' just takes that long to do what it does. Good luck shaking this sleepy feeling after it stops, though.
