The Hedrons - Be My Friend (Measured)
2/5
By: Thomas Hannan
Really, the only justification one can offer for 'Be My Friend' is that The Hedrons, four girls from Glasgow playing some bizarrely butch, dumb rock and roll, at least sound like they're genuinely revelling in playing it. Delivered with anything less that this infectious zeal, it'd be unlistenable. It isn't. It's merely one of those records you sadly forget about whilst you're actually hearing it.
I used the word 'girls' there, and reading it back, it strangely looks like an insult. It's not meant to be in any way, and it's a problem of the way music made by people who dare not to be male is reported that I'm prompted to think it might come across as such. The problem with it is not that men would have done it better. Gah, the thought of four macho idiots bashing out 'Be My Friend' makes the whole scene even worse. It's just a poor song.
They're here, they're enjoying it - hopefully without overwhelming ego or money blindness to the extent that it shan't matter if I stop listening.
