Joan As Policewoman - Eternal Flame (Reveal)

2/5

By: Chris O'Toole

Joan As Policewoman - Eternal FlameWith an awfully mundane title such as 'Eternal Flame' expectations were somewhat low when I pressed play on my new Joan As Police Woman CD. Unfortunately these canyon bottom expectations appeared to be justified after several listens. Despite an impressive recording CV, including work with Nick Cave and Sebadoh, the solo track presented here by Joan is less than inspiring, making me question if perhaps her pretty face inspired her illustrious list of musical accomplices to carry her weight. Perhaps. Perhaps not.

Regardless, 'Eternal Flame' bubbles along attempting to build a tear-jerking scene. Perhaps this track would be suitable for inclusion in a B-Movie during the final, slow and sombre, death of the main character. However, the track virtually creates real suffering, thus making the job of the actor involved just that little easier. The piece has little progression, no surprises or quirks, none of the whimsy of Regina Spektor nor any of the attitude of PJ Harvey. Instead, it's quite content to stroll through the park looking at the flowers. On the evidence of this piece, there's little to make Joan As Policewoman stand out from an already over populated crowd.
