McAlmont & Butler - Speed (Hut)

2/5

By: Gareth Roberts

McAlmont & Butler - SpeedThis single is their first since those in support of 2002's 'Bring It Back' album, and was itself recorded in 2003. Lazy gits! It's not in support of any album, more a stand-alone message of intent - you know, a bit like 'Whatever' was all those years ago.

Their split in 2003 after this track was rejected by EMI is partly to blame for this hiatus, but was it worth the wait? It begins with a drum beat loud enough to wake the dead, and doesn't let up from there, swirling its way through just over 4 atmospheric, soaring and downright monolithic minutes before retiring to the cave where it came from.

The gigantic sonic infusion in the sound creates an effect somewhere along the lines of the Secret Machines fronted by Seal, and David McAlmont's vocal is as strong as ever, if a little over the top in parts. It is essentially, however, a fairly average record. There is no discernible attempt at a change in tempo, or even a proper chorus for that matter. Don't get me wrong, it's not too bad, just as so often is the case, it's not really that good. Plus the b-side is an instrumental version, revealing that the twattish spirit of Suede still lives on in some form.
