Red Cars Go Faster - Micro (High Voltage Sounds)

2/5

By: Chris O'Toole

Red Cars Go Faster - MicroAnother day breaks. Another guitar rock band forms. Everybody dies a little inside. This one happens to be called Red Cars Go Faster, but the name is less than relevant, a mere handle attempting to claim ownership of a sound now so diluted and generic that it is increasingly difficult to know where reared its head and began. With 'Micro', Red Cars Go Faster, rather grandly and seemingly arbitrarily, claim Sonic Youth as a primary reference point, without any credible evidence, and proceed to churn out a further vapid, empty parody of Thurston Moore and Co.

These Red Cars have observed the tactics of Stellastarr* and more recently The Organ and Editors, (namely mining The Cure back catalogue for riffs, hooks and melodies) and here employ these tricks in a vain attempt to move up the greasy career ladder. Without even a hint of self deprecating irony, they take a wild stab in the dark at imitating the real purveyors of doom and gloom, attempting to adopt the oh-so-hip-and-oh-so-menacing vibe, and in the process creating nothing more than an inconsequential tribute to their bygone idols.

With unabashed candour, 'Micro' faithfully mimics several hundred other tracks, pouring them all into a blender with a generous helping of ice water, and throws the contents over the mixing desk in the vain hope of creating something approaching musical progression. Imagine a gentle and friendly Robert Smith taking would be rock stars by the hand and gradually teaching them how to play their instruments; this is how it might sound.
