Firebrand Boy - Orange (Pale Fox)
3/5
By: Chris O'Toole
Combining the electronic manipulation of Phillip Cunningham and the luminous vocal melodies of Gordon Turner, Firebrand Boy create an energetic burst of summertime through the paradigm of upbeat electro-pop. Imagine a low-rent equivalent of Postal Service, with half the budget spent on uppers and a life-time supply of sunshine. Even sitting in the studio with the instruments must be fun enough, utilising as they do a Game Boy, NES, SNES and Atari consoles to produce this handsomely sculpted debut track.
'Orange' sounds as though Firebrand Boy have discovered a dusty old Kraftwerk record in their garage and attempted to recreate what they hear through a modern idiom. The result is honeysuckle dripping lyrics layered over a romanticised electronic beat to create an emotional retelling of the boy-meets-girl-girl-leaves-boy tale. And as the sun sets this spinning concoction takes on a hazy glow, akin to romance with a partner you know isn't attractive but you're still happy to spend time with because you know they're actually a nice person, really.
Never really advancing beyond a gentle pulse, 'Orange' ticks along a the BPM of a human heart after a good sit down and cup of tea, looking idly at old photographs and remembering fond moments past. Not life changing, but certainly adequate.
