Guillemots - Trains To Brazil (Polydor)

5/5

By: JJ Florio

Guillemots - Trains To BrazilIt would be very easy to dismiss the Guillemots as merely a lighthearted party band, music that one can dance mindlessly to at any given indie disco. But beneath the (joyously executed) shiny Motown veneer of this recent single, there lies a more telling message of the band's intent. The first line contains the phrase, "the prophets and the bombs have had another success," and if we consider the release date of this single (September 11th), the Guillemots have here given us a wily commentary on world affairs.

Whereas anyone else with access to a soapbox is busy telling how terrible everything is, The Guillemots response to current affairs is 'Trains To Brazil'; a wonderfully realistic, soul inspired ode to modern times informing us that even though there is difficulty all around, life still has much to offer us all. "And those who moan your lives from one day to the next/ You live and be thankful you are here." Precisely.

This is the most positive and perfect tonic for these chokingly pessimistic times and right now, art should be made for this very reason.
