Fanfarlo - Talking Backwards (Fortuna Pop)

3/5

By: Chris O'Toole

Fanfarlo - Talking BackwardsFanfarlo, the recording pseudonym of Simon Aurell, make maudlin pop music of elegant, shimmering, mild beauty. Originally from Sweden (a nation that interestingly makes more pop music per capita than any other nation on earth, don't you know) and now resident in London, Aurell creates a delicate intimacy in his recordings, using twinkling production amongst layers of blurry fuzz, hiss and reverb to create a homely welcoming feel.

Sounding like early Sparklehorse or a subdued Neutral Milk Hotel, Fanfarlo utilise light weight orchestration in their recordings, building from a morose start to a bright and cheerful chorus, full of sanguine confidence, in a gradual crescendo. Fans longing for the return of the old My Morning Jacket, that is before they became a pseudo reggae band, may find solace here as Aurell's crystalline voice dips and swoops with ease.

The single has the added bonus of ink drawings by the artist in the packaging and is sure to raise a rye smile upon repeated listening.
