The Sleepy Jackson - I Understand What You Want But I Just Don’t Agree (EMI)
2/5
By: Charlie Potter
At this point you might be thinking the same as me - how can you disagree with what someone wants? Is Luke Steele saying to some guy that they don't want what they think they want? Even that doesn't work, as he's already admitted with the words 'I understand what you want' that the thing in question is indeed what the person wants. Get me? So yeah, this whole track is a total mind f**k, man.
The song starts like a weird and interesting twist on something like a Madonna track, and for while makes you bop, mumbling something to yourself about how 'I Understand...' might become pretty interesting. But if someone were to hit you over the head with a newspaper, it'd be funny in a 'Jackass' is funny sort of way, but if they just kept doing so for 3 minutes and 20 seconds, I think you'd find as you do with this song that around about the 1:15 mark, it gets a bit tedious. In fact, I'd go as far as to say that the first eight bars are really actually quite good and immediately uplifting, but sadly, Steele keeps on with his aforementioned syntactical nightmare for about eighty. If you've heard a relatively tame disco beat before, imagine that with the words 'I understand you, I just don't agree' sung over it, in a weirdly impassionate way. And there you go - there's no need to buy the single! Well - you might want to make an effort to hear the first eight bars.
It seems a strange choice of single, but there is absolutely no reason contained in it to write off this band. We'll have to see what The Sleepy Jackson contribute to the future to judge, but for now, you might want to skip this single - or at least seventy two bars of it.
