Dirty Pretty Things - Wondering (Vertigo)
4/5
By: Gareth Roberts
If the jury was still out on the notion that Mr Barat could cut it without his old partner in crime by his side, 'Wondering' surely goes a long way to proving his calibre.
One of the strongest songs on 'Waterloo to Anywhere', this is the third to be lifted from said album, and is another indicator that Peter wasn't the only Libertine who knew his way around a tune. Exuding a pleasing sense of maturity, the intro swoons until the archetypal garage riff kicks in, Barat regaling us with a tale of a relationship endured for the sake of company, "still it's good to be in love with someone, when you've always had to be with no one."
Towards the end of the barely 3 minutes, the relationship does come to an end, and the sun finally sets on something that towards the end seemed increasingly improbable; the more cynical (or should that be downright ridiculous) observer may propose these lyrics are again inspired by the break up of said band, but, you know, that's bollocks. It's a good tune, and another step towards the ghost of the Libs finally being put to bed, maybe then lazy journalists can finally stop mentioning them in reviews...
