Joana and the Wolf - Purple Nights (Regal)
4/5

"Aaaaaa-ooooouh! AHAH!!!"
Such a canine noise, emitting as it does from the mouth of an ethereal, be-fringed young lady, is a deeply, deeply enticing thing. Rockfeedback has no hesitation, and indeed no qualms, about telling you this. It could, in fact, be described as arousing.
"Aaaaaa-ooooouh! AHAH!!! AAAAaaaaaaah-oooooo-UH AHH-AHH!!!!!"
Such a noise is even more pleasurable over simple, stacatto, one-note bass and percussive guitar licks. Even the memory of her erotic howling is enough to make Kasabian's 'Empire' (on which she sings), a more appealing proposition.
And yes, perhaps 'Purple Nights' is a slightly stunted, derivative PJ Harvey track. But then she howls, and every time you hear
"Aaaaaa-ooooouh! AHAH!!! AAAAaaaaaaah-oooooo-UH AHH-AHH!!!!! AH! AH! AHAH!!!"
...distressing thoughts cross your mind, ones you feel a touch guilty for.
Joana and the Wolf - does the indie world need another Polly Jean?
Er...yes.
