Emma McGlynn - Long Time Baby (Impatio Sound)

2/5

By: Charlie Potter

Emma McGlynn - Long Time BabyI can imagine the polite smile whilst her bones begin to crack inside with the sheer frustration that occurs when yet another person says vindictively and in a patronising tone that 'ummm, it sounds a little like Alanis Morissette meets PJ Harvey meets Sheryl Crow...' But let's not forget that PJ Harvey is really, really good, and let's witness that actually there's nothing bad about this song at all. All we need do now is delve a little deeper to see if it's actually good.

It's got simple, gentle chords, and isn't trying to be anything too clever. It clearly isn't trying to last any real stretch of time in terms of staking a claim for the history books either. The sentiment? Well, that's very simple and articulated quite clearly in the catch line 'I don't wanna know where you were last night, I'll just pretend that I don't care...'

Everything about the song musically works - it's up beat and would make a great radio song. Of course though, to survive on the radio the song would have to be played over and over, and this song is certainly not built to be played ad nauseum, and would soon lose it's charm for any sort of discerning radio listener. Still, for that mass of total idiots that is the popular radio demographic who think that if a song gets stuck in their head and they can sing the chorus they like it regardless of whether it evokes any sort of feeling at all, other than annoying the hell out of them, it'd probably be fine.

It's good, for what it is. It could only have happened given the apparent studio budget (the give away amongst other things is the tambourine track), all of which points to there being some real money behind this girl. Let's hope she's around long enough for it to make a difference to her.
