Air Traffic - Never Told Me Her Name (EMI)
3/5
By: JJ Florio
In the current musical climate it's refreshing when four young men get together to form a band, throw a piano into the mix and the results don't sound like Coldplay. Musical plagiarists note: There are many other keyboard led combos from which to pilfer inspiration. Jerry Lee Lewis, Chas and Dave, Dave Brubeck, Rick Wakeman (if you have synths and sense of humour)... all are relatively untapped resources and give a greater chance of "originality."
In an attempt to stand out from the mid-tempo piano fold, Air Traffic are "doing an Elton." So firmly are they rooted in the big mans glam era platforms that even 'Never Told Me Her Name's female protagonist is named "Suzie" (as in Elton's "little Suzie had so much fun" etc). If you're just too goddamn cool to take Elton John's cream (vicar!) then this musical Elmea may just be for you.
One thing, if she never told you her name how do you know it?
