Razorlight - America (Vertigo)
1/5
By: Keri Kennedy
On writing, 'America' has just been knocked off the top spot in the UK chart by emo goth whingers My Chemical Romance, but for once, that is a good thing.
Razorlight must be pretty proud to have gained their first number one, but that's where the pride should stop when it comes to this feeble excuse of a record. From the trite opening lyrics "What a drag it is / the shape I'm in / well I go out somewhere / then I come home again" to the MOR snail's pace backing, it all results in a song that would fit quite nicely in a mid 80s episode of Neighbours. It's a far cry from the excitement of 'Rip It Up'.
The fact 'America' climbed to number one pretty much clarifies what a bland piece of twaddle this really is, appealing to the masses isn't always a good thing. After all, look at James Blunt, Maroon 5, Dido, Chelsea FC, The Nazis and now Razorlight. Millions loved them, yet no-one knows why. Go back to your roots, Razorlight, and do us all a favour.
