Mogwai – Music From ‘Zidane’ OST (Pias)

4/5

By: Charlie Potter

mogwai - ZidanePhillipe Parreno, Douglas Gordon and Mogwai - surely this film must be amazing even if you despise football. Like me. I haven't seen it but heck, I'm gonna.

But on to the songs... well if these songs were on quietly in a crowded pub under water with a sock over the speaker, and someone asked you who it was... well, you'd know they were making a sarcastic joke. Of course it's Mogwai. In fact, this is Mogwai pretending to be Mogwai, if anything. So is there any point to buying these two songs? Well, perhaps not a lot... not unless you already own every one of their brilliant albums and can't bear the thought of there being two songs out there not privileged to your ownership.

The first track 'Black Spider' uses that basic Mogwai build up, but is followed by the far more interesting 'Half time'. Get me not wrong - these are good tracks (especially the second one) but for the love of Santa go and see the film. I imagine you'll hate it, just because the odds are in favour of you being the sort of idiot (we love you) who will only watch an alternative film equating to something like a Bond movie, and then complain that there weren't enough explosions, let alone a 'storyline'. But even if you do hate it, I promise you'll be a better person at the end of it than if you had have watched some other brainless drivel.

I could understand if you are a hardened mogwai fan then you may be excited about the vinyl and not bothered about the film, but I urge you to go and hear these songs in the context that they belong. The context that is the reason they exist in the first place. Don't forget that cinema speakers will be much better than the ones you have in your front room, and if you don't think that makes a difference then their really is no hope for you.

Again, we love you.
