Hicks-Milligan Prophecy - The Good, The Bad & The Iceberg EP (Atomic Duster)

4/5

By: Charlie Potter

Hicks-Milligan Prophecy - The Good The Bad & The Iceberg I'm not sure if this sinister disco music is supposed to be funny, but there is something really silly about it. There's even something oddly black metal to it, and whilst I know most won't know the difference between, say, black metal and death metal, let me just put a quick end to your confusion as you sit up questioning whether there actually is a distinction at all. There's a big one. Death metal is always really heavy and often fast, black metal is more of an extreme continental take on 80's Goth music, and can be heavy, but is often just a bunch of miserable weirdo's with keyboards. Remember this.

I'm yet to hear any of my fantastic genre titles slipping into the mass media, but I may have it this time with 'black disco', not to be confused with 'death disco', a phrase that gets plastered around all manner of things that as far as I know had something to do with the early days of PiL. But maybe not. I don't care.

It sounds like this band have really broad tastes, which along with their crazy sound gives the impression that they're more interested in having fun on the live circuit than making loads of money, or at least I hope so, because this rough and ready recording aesthetic really suits them. I sincerely look forward to hearing an album, and hope they get enough of a cult status to warrant them doing some gigs at some decently sized venues.

Whether this is the knowing alternative band with a sense of humour I hope it is, or a band at the beginning of the long walk of mainstream success, they are undeniably a very interesting proposition, and deserve a decent full length attempt which will give a much better idea of what it is this band are up to. It could be anything.
