Absentee - There’s a Body in a Car Somewhere (Memphis Industries)

4/5

By: Charlie Potter

Absentee 'There's a Body in a Car Somewhere' is a great single, a beautiful sound which is filled out discretely with all manner of instrumentation, but it's chiefly the high frequencies reached by the glockenspiel that make it particularly complete.

The basic appeal of it as a track is the tone of the music and the tenor of the singers voice combined with the murderous sentiment of the song, not to mention the lovely artwork (which we couldn't find anywhere on the net - pah, you'll just have to buy it), which looks like the new wave illustrator punk look that you would associate with an alternative comic aimed at older teenagers.

The song itself is about killing your girlfriend because she asks the wrong questions (whoo, yeah, amen to that etc.) There's a twist though, and it's in the upbeat cheery nature of the songs. Then, just to confuse you even further, you've got the singer's inimitably drab tone, which works brilliantly. It's got a very strong catch line in 'should I laugh or should I cry?' that is if anything a little over used, but the rest of the lyrics are very considered, discrete and intriguing. Much like everything Absentee do.
