We Are Trees - Piece of Plastic / Trace (?)

3/5

By: Charlie Potter

We Are TreesIt's an indie pop rock double a-side which, as a self release, is well thought out. The production is of a really high quality, but sadly for We Are Trees, the existence of tons of bands that sound similar (by that I mean the very instant, accessibly produced guitar pop they're doing), leaves the band with the tough job of finding their audience using only the tools of structure and sentiment.

As for structure, the songs are very simple, but it's all there, inclusive of some rather decent soloing action. But I struggle to make sense of the meaning behind the tracks - they can seem to be at once nonsense and generic simultaneously. So then, so far it's not looking too good, but that's because the essence of this is not here but in their way with a chord progression. Whilst this may not sound like much, they do seem to deftly emanate a style rooted in the melody of the sixties whilst maintaining a sound of their own with their crazy minor key changes, and those floating solos.

It seems a harsh way to judge a band, but this is merely a testament to the value of not taking the tried and tested route. I don't think that this band are anywhere near as dull as a lot of the bands they sound like, but you do have to listen carefully to reach that conclusion. If I myself were in this band, I'd sit 'em down, strap 'em in and strongly persuade them to make a lot more of their ability to do really crazy solos, either by making them last longer or having many, many more of them.
