Bat For Lashes - Trophy (The Echo Company) 4/5

4/5

By: Chris O'Toole

Bat For Lashes - TrophyWalking through thick fog in an unknown forest a rumbling emerges from nearby caves. The entrance is dark and forbidding but moving to investigate you are drawn into an underground chamber. The unidentified sound fills the air, pulling you through the waving narrow tunnels and passages until a chink of light appears in the distance. Moving closer you see Bat For Lashes standing half in and half out of the light, her face shrouded in mystery/cloth. She is singing the song of a subterranean siren, with a rattle snake curling around her ankles occasionally throwing a threatening glance in your direction.

She continues her slow heart attack dance, oblivious to your presence. Her song is one of repentance and regret; a moving exploration of loss through the medium of violin and tambourine. In the wings Bjork and Nick Cave look on with knowing approval; their daughter is a fast learner. Drawn closer still you reach out to touch this irresistible creature, and your hand moves through her. As quickly as it began it is over and you begin your return to the surface, baring your burden like a secret.
