Peaches - Boys Wanna Be Her (XL)
3/5
By: Charlie Potter
I've seen this ex teacher playing air hockey with Vincent Gallo in the flesh. It was one of the most surreal experiences I've ever had. So there you go - now you know I'm really cool, you can listen up.
People who think that singles with 3 remixes of the same song tacked on are cool need to get their head examined - remixes have to be exceptionally good to be worth listening to directly after the song that has been remixed. These here remixes are good, but I think that there are so many other possible outlets for this sort of thing that they needn't spoil the possibility of the excitement of having just one track and then silence (that's your lot), let alone original b-sides, It just feels like a way of bribing fans into buying something they already own only to be fobbed off with some a rehashed version of something they do in fact already possess.
I have always known that Peaches was good, but it was only brought to my attention more recently that she is in fact really good, at a party when my friend Andrew (the DJ for the night) played her three albums in chronological order. It was one of the best DJ sets I've heard at a party (thank you, Andrew). Peaches makes the ultimate party music and 'Boys Wanna Be Her' is no exception. It doesn't really go anywhere, but it's all the better for its simplicity. It's on songs like this that structural simplicity belongs - where the sounds are all so good that there needn't be any extended solos or such like.
'The boys wanna be her, the girls wanna be her...' is a lyric which could contain a message to do with equality or androgyny behind it, and indeed we know that Peaches is more than familiar with the theme of androgyny, but if it does contain something of the sort I'd rather let the message creep up into my subconscious and settle like a fine silt. You? All you need to know is that it's catchy.
The only thing that might be considered a disappointment is that we have of course heard all this before from Peaches, perhaps not quite so much in the form of a single, but still, long time Peaches fans maybe desperate for her to explore some uncharted areas. Still, I must stress I look forward to inevitably hearing this when I'm out somewhere. As singles go, it's one to hear, and if you're someone prone to not being in your own house, undoubtedly you'll get to hear it.
