Little Man Tate - Man I Hate Your Band (V2)
4/5

Sheffield four-piece Little Man Tate are not only taking full advantage of the void left by The Libertines, but riding the waves in the wake of the Arctic Monkeys rather cleverly. The cover artwork for 'Man I Hate Your Band' screams of the Libs' 'Up The Bracket', whilst Jon Windle's vocal is pure Monkeys as the lyrics radiate a Northern wit and charm that tell a story of a band trying to get signed but failing.
Pushing comparisons aside, Little Man Tate seem on this evidence to be more than able to create a cheeky and catchy hit, with lyrics like "...forget about the birds / they don't need names or tickets / they're the ones in denim skirts... no knickers underneath" - they hit the nail on the head with cultural observations, all over a swaggering guitar pop and thumping melody.
No matter what they say about being childhood friends getting together to form Little Man Tate, I prefer to think that Jon, Maz, Ben and Dan are the cocky spawn of Pete Doherty and Alex Turner; they've got the best of both parents in equal measure, resulting in a wonderfully wry, singalong tune.
