Tiny Dancers - Lions and Tigers and Lions EP (Parlophone)
5/5
By: Gareth Roberts
For a band whose live shows are characterised by, among other things, face paints, balloons and bubbles, it is a bit surprising that this ep sounds kind of, well... normal.
Not in a bad way, just normal in the sense that it's just simple, good music. Opener '20 to 9' is as mature a piece of music as you're likely to hear, sounding in an odd way like U2, but better - obviously. 'Hemsworth Hallway' is equally addictive, a driving stomp that possesses more hooks than an angler's tackle box.
At this point, you're wondering whether they can keep up these high standards. The answer? Of course they can. 'Russian Snow' and 'Sun Goes Down' don't disappoint us, and by now it has become apparent that this band are damn good, and that in singer David Kay they have one of the best voices I've heard in a while.
'Going Away' brings the journey to an end in fitting fashion, a brilliant slice of old school rock'n'roll that'll have you scouring charity shops looking for a pair of blue suede shoes before you know it. And another thing I like about it - the sleeve is designed by David Bailey. Overall, a perfect package really.
