Noisettes - Don’t Give Up (Vertigo)
4/5
By: Charlie Potter
This is a brilliant song. You should know this by now, especially if you've seen the Noisettes perform this song recently, as I have. You'll be fully aware of what an incredible experience that is.
Like you, before I listened to this song, I was about to give up. Then I heard, and I thought no! DON'T give up! You can do it, Charlie! And that thing I was going to give up could have been anything, it might have been ending famine, it might have been lifting a box (a really heavy box), most likely in my case though it would have been trying to throw this here piece of paper into the bin at that there other side of the room. What is important is that I got that piece of paper in the bin, all I needed was that bit of encouragement. So go on, help yourself out. Go buy this single. 'Don't Give Up'.
And if it fails to motivate you, you'll still have a bloody good song at the end of it. Starty stoppy, thumping, to the point, concise, succinct - 'Don't Give Up' is all of these things and more. It also has lots of words in it, and chords, and drums, and a proper solo - and even after all that it's still a very comfortable, accessible listen. There are bands that play straight up rock because they aren't very skilled musicians, and there are bands that play it because knocking out some ffiths is much more fun than widdling away on your own all night, and whilst one should have respect for both (myself having had experience in the former), this band are clearly the latter. There's not a hint of ego in earshot.
Everything you want from an energetic, off beat rock song is right here on this record.
