Metronomy - Trick or Treatz (Holiphonic)

4/5

By: Charlie Potter

Metronomy - Trick or TreatzMetronomy, a.k.a 'Joseph Mount' a.k.a. 'The Dog' a.k.a. 'The Historectomy Tree on Fire Motherb*tch', has written some of the best tracks this year ('You Could Easily Have Me' and 'Black Eye / Burnt Thumb'), so part of me expected 'Trick or Treatz' to be a little disappointing. They were that good. And yeah, alright, it is - a little bit. But it could have let me down much, much harder.

Since the last single Metronomy have put out an impressive array of successful remixes which has lead to Joseph Mount's production skills dramatically improving, but one still has to wonder just where are all the incredible layers of melody we were so in love with? And where has this girl's voice come from?

However it would be a terrible shame to be too focused on how good this single could have been and miss out on saying what a good single it still is. Everything's in the right place - the ultra compressed drum sounds are really nice, clean and tight, there are some really lovely crusty bits, and actually the more you listen to it the more you can indeed hear the layered bass melodies and the really driving tune that pushes the song along in the same way that the aforementioned earlier tracks do. It ends up being utterly addictive.

Metronomy, without doing anything particularly revolutionary, manage to achieve something that just feels like either a new sound or something so subtle and particular it could never be copied. The way this song builds and then falls away is not something I have ever heard in anything else before, and by placing a lot of the emphasis on melody Joseph Mount serves to bridge many gaps between various planes of music. Metronomy still excite me, and I'll continue to tell all my friends to go out of their way to hear them.
