Shiny Toy Guns - Le Disko (Mercury)

2/5

By: Sofie Jenkinson

Shiny Toy Guns - Le DiskoIn the tradition of any persisting sound at a particular time there are those that do it so mind-blowingly well that it leads to the loss of control and those that seem to miss the point and almost ruin it forever, but then there are those that are do something that is very nearly amazing, but not quite convincing enough.

A fat dollop of filthy bass and driving beat are a flawless basis for something great; all the trappings at the very least. At times the icing on the cake; vocals, lyrics and random silence, seem like they have been plucked off a rather cheesy staple from MTV's dance channel. The kind of effort that is often connected to the Neighbours school of musical education. It's easy to see what the desired effect is; laid back sexy vocals over the thick grinding bass, it's worked for so many others before but it seems lazy rather than sexy in this case. There is, notably, a breakdown mid way through which really helps to sell 'Le Disko' short and can only be compared to a chorus in a Christmas song.

Maybe there is just too many amazing bands rocking their own filthy bass discos at the moment for this to be impressive enough to want to listen to it ever again, but that said, with its frequent moments of greatness 'Le Disco' definitely possesses an immense amount of remix potential; by taking it that extra mile could reach the next level, where people lose control.
