Scott Matthews - Dream Song (San Remo)
4/5

As each bare foot gently slips grain by grain into the wet sand by the edge of the sea the world begins to make a little more sense. You jump and spin around; hands grabbing at the perfect sea encrusted air all soaked in a deep sunset orange. Looking out of the window you see a damp grey sky and skeleton trees but this song can turn even the darkest of days into that beach. Scott Matthews is capable of doing what a month of Sunday's on a beach does for every gap year student; mind and soul.
It would certainly take very little imagination to lump Matthews in with an ilk of laid back surf rock, a lot of what is missed with Jack Johnson, however, is a lot easier to grasp here. Unlike Johnson it is not an advantage to have discovered him while sitting by a bonfire on the beach, but it probably helps. And most importantly it seems so different to the majority of singer songwriters championed by the mainstream media, with actual real integrity and life experience behind it.
Like with most things which find themselves resonating around the very inner chambers of a thudding heart Matthews voice is unique down to every long elongated note, flitting amongst the backdrop of an immense tapestry of strings as accomplished at creating such soul-bursting feelings as he himself. Sometimes it's hard to remember those times that felt like the elixir of life, 'Dream Song' is a very good reminder.
