Good Shoes - The Photos On My Wall (Brille)

4/5

By: Alex Lee Thomson

Good Shoes - The Photos On My WallYou could be forgiven for thinking that this is our beloved Eddie Argos on vocals as there's a distinct sharpness and annunciation associated with the leader of the art-rock world that's also present here, but where the Brut fall down a spiralling and endless rant that the majority of their songs inevitably do, Good Shoes seem to sustain a level of contentment throughout.

'The Photos On My Wall' is a stew of several well defined elements that somehow work together combining the ruthless decent of art-pop with the shudder of more severe indie and rock like 'Little Thoughts' era Bloc Party or The Rakes equally as endearing early work. There are a lot of bands out doing this kind of thing right now; putting some feisty guitars over a random bass line and talking some pointy lyrics over the top until the songs pretty much pointless chorus kicks in, but what Good Shoes do is liquefy these fundamentals in a blender until they're almost unrecognisable.

The result is this dizzy and happy-clappy number which for all its melancholy faults, works. I've loved putting this on and at the end of the day if every song made you feel as good as this, there wouldn't be any need for narcotics.
