Little Barrie - Love You (Pias Recordings)

4/5

By: Alex Lee Thomson

Little Barrie - Love YouIn this day n' age, there's no reason to sound like the mass equivalent of your nearest contemporaries yet with that said, it's a record that's often spun by wanna be demi-rock gods - however in Little Barrie's case, fabulously sidestepped. They're not so much trying to introduce a seemingly antiquated sound via some obscure Prince and The Revolution crossed with Kings Of Leon backdoor, but genuinely unite two previously uncoordinated musical time periods into a sound that the whole bloody family can enjoy.

This is the kind of CD you hope will land on your desk, something just so against the trend that it begs, nay demands, attention. Somewhere between The Beatles and Subways comes this wholesome and fidgety rock n' roll scuffle that internally detonates into a tough and invigorating clatter of Beach Boys guitars and McCartney vocals. There are a few bands trying this White Stripes influenced 'old school' approach today (The On/Offs and The Rifles to name a few), but Little Barrie has really captured the feel of nostalgia and contemporised it without pollution.
