Jarvis – Don’t Let Him Waste Your Time (Rough Trade)
4/5
By: Alex Lee Thomson
Like all of your heroes tied down with the history of a band, when Jarvis Cocker shook off the constraints of Pulp and decided to take it solo, the nation held its breath until the new material was anxiously delivered. You want so, so much for it to be even held up against 'Help The Aged' and 'Do You Remember The First Time', but as a shock to all, Jarvis didn't just make a commendable first stab at a solo effort, but seriously compromised the effect of Pulps work by making one hell of an LP, and this, its crowning glory.
Its strident and ballsy opening gambit stomps in with some very Jarvis like wailing, laced with the lyrical greatness we'd darn well expect, and methodically strolls through its Flaming Lips challenging tribal march until an outlandish chorus shunts out the complication of the verse. Some great mixing on this track stacks the full-on orchestra with a faint yet commanding Jarvis vocal into a manageable and seemingly effortless melody. There seems to be no fussing on this and flows so effortlessly there's more than a hope we can expect further releases to rival, dare we say... no seriously, dare we say?... 'Common People'.
