Guillemots – Annie, Let’s Not Wait (Polydor)
2/5

There's no question that these Guillemots are very talented musicians. Couple this with the fact that Fyfe Dangerfield has a fairly good knack of writing tunes that are instantly catchy whilst possessing a depth lacking from most pop music these days, and you've got yourself a good band.
'Annie, Let's Not Wait' is the fourth track to be taken from their acclaimed debut album, and whilst it doesn't have the sincerity of 'Made up Love Song #43' or the pop perfection of 'Trains to Brazil', it isn't lacking in essential elements required for hit songs. So having established that it's a relatively good track, we have now earned the right to have a critical little rant, yes?
Ok. Well, the thing is, it sounds like it was written for radio. This in itself is not an inherently bad thing - heck, everyone needs to pay the mortgage. But by the same token, illegal arms dealers need to pay their mortgages, and that doesn't make what they do right. As such it's the kind of thing that makes me think that Guillemots might perhaps be little more than the latest 'indie' band (along with the likes of Keane and Snow Patrol) to appear on your mum's Christmas list this coming year. But seriously, like I said, it ain't bad - just as is so often the depressing case, it just really isn't that good.
